MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH? In Hawaii, the Appreciation is Non-Stop! BY LEE SCHALLER From the Top “The military’s presence in Hawaii is vital to our national security and critical to the state’s economic health,” says U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, chair of the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Appropriations. Now Gov. Neil Abercrombie, as U.S. Representative of the First Congressional District of Hawaii, chaired the House Armed Services Committee on Air and Land Force operations, budget and equipment procurement. In that capacity, he told us, “The economic recession has brought real hardship to many families in Hawaii. Yet the impact would be even wider and more severe without the productive partnership with the military, local building and construction industry and the building trades.” “…our warriors can do great things if they return to a grateful nation that provides them with the care and support they have earned.” U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka In U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka’s 20-year membership on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, the last four as chair, he has been instrumental in enacting new laws including the Veterans Health Care Reform and Transparency Act, the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act, the Veterans Benefit Act We felt it fitting during the celebration of the 26th annual Hawaii Military Appreciation Month to pay a special tribute to our military in Hawaii. The military presence here goes far beyond national security and a dependable source of work for our island companies, which translates into hefty economic benefits. It is a partnership that extends into all facets of life in Hawaii, from supporting our local communities and benefiting our nonprofits to taking part in local events. 26 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | MAY 2011
