NewsBeat Hawaii Prince Gets Makeover The Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club in May began a $5 million revitalization of its property in preparation for November’s Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) summit, including a $1.8 million contract to restore the hotel’s signature waterfall fronting Ala Moana Blvd. Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc., the general contractor selected to complete the waterfall renovation, will be reducing both the volume of the pool and the height of the water feature to 25 feet from its current 51-foot height and installing battered walls to minimize overspray in a design created by Anbe, Aruga and Ishizu Architects. Approximately 80 percent of the existing 2,400-square-foot pool portion of the water feature will be converted to landscaping, integrating Rhapis and MacArthur palms, plumerias, spider lily and red ti plants in a design created by landscaping firm Hawaii Design Associates. According to a hotel spokesperson, restoring and restructuring the water feature will cost the Hawaii Prince Hotel $1.5 million, with another $300,000 going towards landscaping. The remainder of the revitalization project will be a refresh of the interiors of the hotel’s 521 units, including new flatscreen televisions, carpeting, local artwork and light fixtures. Philpotts & Associates was selected as the project’s interior designer. Work on the restoration project began in the second quarter of 2011 and is scheduled for completion in September. Above, the new waterfall, shown here in an artists’ rendering, will be about half the height of the previous structure and will incorporate tropical landscaping in 80 percent of the existing 2,400-square-foot pool area.
