According to Douglas Lee, the ACECH is dedicated to improving the business climate and opportunities for consulting engineering firms. “I look forward to my term as president to enhance the collaboration within ACECH and with other organizations in our industry to improve service to our member firms and elevate the status of our engineering profession within our community,” he says of his goals for the coming year. BIA Dedicates New Hawaiian Home The Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA) in June conducted open house tours of its New Hawaiian Home and was scheduled to have a dedication ceremony on July 29, prior to the family moving in during August. “It feels great to have completed this very successful project in 84 working days with more than 90 contractors and suppliers,” says Karen Nakamura, executive vice Karen Nakamura in front president and of the home’s vegetable/ CEO of the herb garden; most of the BIA. “Everyone landscaping at the New stepped up and Hawaiian Home is edible. exceeded and outperformed all of our expectations.” Designed as a model demonstration prototype of designing and building green, the net-zero home is intended to provide the training and education to developers, contractors, trade workers, realtors, consultants and the community to actively support a sustainable, modern lifestyle that advocates for the values found in the Hawaiian ahupuaa. The design, construction and operation of the home focuses on energy and water conservation, resource efficient building design and materials, and indoor environmental quality, and also takes into account the home’s overall impact on the environment. This includes use of water and energy-efficient fixtures and appliances, orientation of the house to take advantage of natural daylight and ventilation, use of renewable, recyclable and/or recycled materials when able, low-VOC finishes, rainwatering harvesting, aquaponics, solar water heating, photovoltaics and edible landscaping such as fruit trees and a vegetable/herb garden. The previous 55-year-old home was deconstructed by Re-use Hawaii. “We cannot believe the response we have had to the New Hawaiian Home open houses; more than 300 people in three days,” Nakamura adds. “Everyone is hungry for information and both the trade and the consumers are coming to see what the differences are and how it feels to live in this New Hawaiian Home. I think we are accomplishing what we set out to do, which was to build this model demonstration home to educate Hawaii about how to design green, how to build green and how to live green.” Construction of BIA’s prototype net-zero home was completed in May, followed by open house tours in June and a scheduled dedication on July 29. 8 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | AUGUST 2011
