SpotlightOnSuccess Wahiawa Transit Center Park and Ride Facility HONOLULU BUILDERS On May 3, 2010, ground was broken on a project that brings a long-time vision to reality — a much-needed public transportation hub for Wahiawa and surrounding communities. State and City & County of Honolulu officials and community members attending the groundbreaking welcomed the start of the highly anticipated facility, emphasizing its importance to an area that “really depends on the bus.” A Sense of Place — A Place that Makes Sense The Wahiawa Transit Center Park and Ride Facility visually pays tribute to the area’s history as a major source of pineapple production, while meeting the needs of public transit commuters — both today and into the future. “Key design features that connect the facility with the pineapple growing history of Wahiawa,” says Tim Sinn, project manager for general contractor Honolulu Builders, LLC, “include a traditional clock tower fronting California Avenue, with two 72-inch diameter clocks.” Also incorporated into the overall design by project architect AM Partners LLC is a prominent pineapple motif. “There are two 14-foot-tall pineapple decorative metal grilles on the clock tower,” explains Sinn, “plus 42 24-inch-tall stone pineapple medallions on the second level parapet walls.” Further enhancing the Victorian look are eight classic lantern-style twin pole mounted luminaries on the second level parking area. The new $5.2 million facility has two levels, each 23,000 square feet. There are 55 parking stalls plus an 44 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | SEPTEMBER 2011 additional three stalls designated for handicap parking. In a constructionoriented sidelight, Sinn reports that more than 3,000 yards of concrete and 35,000 lineal feet of post-tension cables were utilized in the project, which took just 382 calendar days to complete. Commuter Convenience Of primary concern to the entire project team, from the City & County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services to the architect/designer and general contractor, was the service it would provide to its end-user, the public transit commuter.
