IndustryIcons HPM and Hawaii: A History of Service Left, HPM’s first Hilo store, circa 1923 Below, some of HPM’s current owner-employowner-employ ees at the Kona branch. Through a global world war and two devastating tsunamis, from territorial decades to the growing pains of statehood, HPM has survived and thrived as one of Hawaii’s iconic industry companies. Founded in 1921 as Hawaii Planing Mill, Ltd. by local building contractors Kametaro Fujimoto and Sanzo Kawasaki, the company began as a lumber milling operation, planing and sawing timber from the mainland into finishing dimensions. Today, HPM represents more than 2,200 lines of lumber, building materials and tools, with five locations servicing Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. In 2011, HPM’s 90th anniversary year, the company acquired Kauai Lumber. In addition to serving Hawaii’s construction industry, HPM gives back to the community through its HPM Foundation, supporting local nonprofits, and through the Barney Fujimoto Memorial Scholarship, which each year awards scholarships to Big Island high school seniors planning to attend college within the University of Hawaii system. All in all, a fitting legacy to a true industry icon.
