Lahaina’s Golden Arches Goes GREEN McDonald’s of Hawaii held a grand reopening on July 7 after a six-month renovation project performed by general contractor CC Engineering and Construction, Inc. Work began on Jan. 9 and was substantially complete on June 14. A key element of the remodel was increasing the facility’s energy efficiency, accomplished through a number of green building methods. For example, this is the first McDonald’s of Hawaii project with a pervious concrete parking lot to promote ground water retention on site. The expanded and upgraded 4,349-square-foot restaurant also includes state-ofthe-art, high-efficiency air conditioning rooftop units, highly efficient oil cooking equipment, low-flow water consumption toilet fixtures, a high efficiency gas water heater, doubleinsulated clear glass windows and LED lighting in the dining area and restrooms. The restaurant previously was 4,070 square feet in size. The parking lot consists of 18 parking stalls, two handicap stalls, one van drop-off stall and one loading zone. Besides a blessing performed by Kahu Alalani Hills, the celebration included fireworks, hula dancers, a traditional lion dance and a performance by Gee Young’s International Martial Arts. Even Ronald McDonald himself made an appearance. Right, the grand reopening celebration included a traditional Hawaiian blessing, a hula performance and other entertainment.
