AIA Hosts Sixth Canstruction Competition The Honolulu chapter of the American Institute of Architects hosted its sixth annual Canstruction fundraising competition on Sept. 24 at Pearlridge Center, during which dedicated teams of local architects and allied design, construction and engineering professionals “canstructed” giant structures made entirely out of canned foods. The 23,415 pounds of food collected have all been donated to the Hawaii Foodbank. This year’s theme was “Canned Cinema – Dinner and a Movie.” After a blind judging on the day of the event, architect Reid Mizue, AIA, Canstruction co-chair, announced the following honors: • Jurors’ Favorite: “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner!” (from the movie Monsters, Inc.) by InSynergy Engineering announced in October, after the public was encouraged to vote for its favorite structure by donating canned food, with one can equaling one vote: • People’s Choice: “Release the KraCAN” (from movie Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest) by Richard Matsunaga and Associates Architects, Inc.
