Truly Happy
If William Morris was right when he said, “The secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details..., and in elevating them to art,” then true bliss can be found with the two projects we’ve highlighted in this month’s Spotlight on Success and Concept to Completion features. They are, respectively, Aulani and Hickam Historic Homes. I took a tour of Disney’s new resort in October, led by representatives of both general contractor Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc. and architect of record, Architects Hawaii, Ltd. The effort that went into even the smallest details — from concrete joints purposely made to look like aged cracks to thatching dyed to look more weathered — is amazing, to say the least. Learn more about the project, starting on page 38. At Hickam, there lies a unique neighborhood of 334 nationally registered historic buildings. A handful of these structures have been meticulously restored to look as they did when originally constructed in the late 1930s. This entails removing/reversing the changes wrought by time and people, an arduous task requiring patience and diligence. This story begins on page 28.

A Bumpy Ride?
Meanwhile, as one of the toughest years for the construction industry draws to a close, many are loathe to predict what lies ahead, especially with cash-strapped federal, state and county governments potentially limiting public projects and stiff financing standards making it difficult for private projects to move forward. But it’s not all doom and gloom from those who are willing to speak up, as you’ll learn when you read Associate Editor Lee Schaller’s feature on What’s Developing in our Construction Industry Guide Hawaii. Our annual directory should reach your mailbox later this month. On the flipside, Lee recaps the past year in this issue, examining the top projects, stories and issues that were top of mind in 2011. It begins on page 14. And don’t miss our Guam update, written by Jason Soeda, starting on page 30. Finally, please remember to take a moment and enjoy the blessings of the holiday season. Yes it’s been a difficult year and it’s unclear what awaits in 2012, but for now, you’ve pulled through and you’re still standing. So pat yourselves on the back, then take a deep breath and face what’s coming with the same stoicism and steadfastness for which the industry is known.
