esigned by architect Norman
Lacayo, Harbor Court was
completed near the end of the local
Japanese investment boom in 1994. It
is one of the most creatively designed
residential condos in Honolulu. It
includes Egyptian motifs as seen in
the monumental ground floor plaza
entry, art deco forms, Hawaiian
ponds, and an overall tiered form that
is "sun oriented" to interact with light
and shadow. The luxurious gateway
to downtown consists of 120 luxury
condos, 18 floors of commercial
space and retail spaces located on the
ground floor plaza.
However, after 20 years of facing
Honolulu Harbor's sea salt and sun,
the building's large arched roofs
needed to be replaced. Harbor Court's
property manager Jimmy Ventura,
with Douglas Emmett Management
Hawaii, LLC, says, "With Harbor
Court's presence of high-end
residences and executive offices, it is
paramount that the building maintains
its long-term structural integrity
and beauty." Commercial Roofing &
Waterproofing Hawaii (CRW) was
called upon to install new arched roofs
at the 41-story, mixed-use building.
According to CRW vice president
Larry Young, there were a total of five
arched roofs that needed complete
replacement. A comprehensive safety
program was developed for this
project, which included a priority full
fall arrest system and railings, since
the CRW crew faced strong winds
while tasked with removing the
existing arch metal roof panels from
the 34 to 40 floor levels.
After the arched metal panels
and decking were removed and
