BOMA President’s Message Happy New Year from BOMA to you and your families! 2012 is finally here and my tenure as BOMA Hawaii President has officially commenced. Due to the high standards previous presidents have set through their vision and leadership, I take the reins with anxiety and trepidation. My father always said that it’s always easier to fill a position when your predecessors were substandard… and this is clearly not the case. I’d like to formally thank 2011 BOMA President, Ray Marquina, for nominating me to be his successor. His leadership and guidance were invaluable to my training in how best to serve our BOMA family and on what lies ahead. Of course it would be unjust if I did not mention the hard work that our Association Executive, Nicole Nako, puts into BOMA. Thank you so much Nicole! BOMA would not be where it is today without your hard work behind the scenes. As you all know, we rolled out our first ever annual sponsorships, so I’d like to give special thanks to all of our 2012 Sponsors: Platinum – ABM Family of Services, Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing, Hawaiian Building Maintenance, Mitsubishi Elevator, Standard Parking and Tropical Roofing & Raingutters. Gold – Chelsea Group, CommonWealth REIT, Honolulu Disposal, Kawika’s Painting, Securitas Security Services and ThyssenKrupp Elevator. Silver – Central Pacific Bank, Island Controls, Seal Masters of Hawaii and Servi-Tek. I look forward to a great year working with all of you, our sponsors, and continuing the success that we are accustomed to. I hope that all of you take the time to appreciate what BOMA brings and get involved to make this an even more valuable organization. Have a great year! Aloha, Jeff Shinagawa (S) LEED AP, 2012 BOMA Hawaii President Certified Hawaii’s Alan Takumi Named to CAI Hawaii Chapter Board of Directors COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS Certified Hawaii INSTITUTE announced that Vice President Alan Takumi was elected to the Board of Directors of the Hawaii Chapter of Community Association Institute (CAI). In the Air Force, he was the superintendent of the 60th Aircraft Generation Squadron where he managed 520 personnel, 40 vehicles, five facilities and 37 transport aircraft. The National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers awarded him the certification of Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA) designation in 2000. He then achieved the Association Management Specialist (AMS) designation in 2002, the Accredited Resident Manager (ARM) designation in the fall of 2002, and achieved the highest level of certification in 2006 when he was awarded the Professional Association Community Manager (PCAM) certification. Wow! The 2012 seminar schedule will get off to a fabulous start on Feb. 21 at the beautiful King Kamehameha Club. Thanks to the efforts of Ron Tsukamaki of Atlas Insurance, our featured speaker will be Gordon Ito, Hawaii’s Insurance Commissioner. Ito and a panel of insurance experts will speak to the present and future conditions and how they affect condominium insurance law and enforcement. We expect our Q & A to be lively and informative. Our Annual Meeting and the “Almost Free Legal Advice” Seminar will be held on March 27.
