Kauai Hoe Wa’a 2013 This year the Garden Island will become a paddling Mecca due to so many great events throughout 2013. We are honored to host the Kauai World Challenge one-man canoe relay in April, as well as the State Championships and Na Pali Challenge in August. The first of Kauai Hoe Wa’a one-man races is in the books as an epic start to a challenging season. The race started at Poipu Beach Park and finished at Port Allen Fishing Club. The race set the bar high with conditions that were challeng- ing to veterans and downright spooky for novices. The launch was dicey with consistent 4 ft. surf in Poipu, and heavy trades and seas on the outside. an ama. Tyrus Siale 1:02:12 in open, Keone Miyake 1:02:47, 40-plus and Dave Parmenter 1:05:02, 50-plus, were close behind. Almost forgot a tough little lady, Noe Auger who was the first female to finish. It seems that everyone had smiles at the finish of this event. This race was followed up by a great lunch and a safety briefing led by Kalani Vierra who provided information to keep the paddling community safe going forward throughout the one-man season. We should all be so lucky to have such amazing support as we do with the Kauai Hoe Wa’a Board and their crew. Also, don’t forget to sign up for the 11th Ideal if you like it a little gnarly. Thanks to great Annual Kauai World Challenge on April 27th. support by Kauai Lifeguards and escort boats, prizes will be given for the elite division, as well as for specific age divisions. Live Hawaiian music will highlight the festivities. Sign up today at www.kauaiworldchallenge.org. By LeRoy Jumper paddle on Thursday, April 25th insight by race director Tyrus Siale, and amazing everyone made it to the start with only a few canoes with minor damage from the rough Kauai waters, and all humans accounted for! On a per- sonal note, it was great to see Luke Evslin back on the start line in Kauai waters. Tyrus, last off the beach, made it to the line and called Go! We had east winds at 20-plus and seas running about 6 feet, right down the pipe. The times on this course attest to the excel- lence of sea and swell. Surfski gurus Wes Dasilva and Dylan Thomas finished one and two with times under one hour. Somebody buy these guys The 3-day event begins with a “warm up” 8-mile followed by race registration and carbo-load dinner on Friday, April 26th. Then on Saturday, the main event, the 34-mile coastal relay race begins at Wailua Beach Park at 8:00 am. Relay teams paddle from Wailua Beach to Salt Pond Beach Park with paddler exchanges at specific exchange points. A fabulous party is held at the finish at Salt Pond Beach Park where thousands of dollars in cash www. pacificpaddler.com - February 2013 11 http://www.kauaiworldchallenge.org http://www.xcelwetsuits.com http://www.pacificpaddler.com
