ON-LINE CALENDAR You Can Paddle, You Can Paddle, but can you swim? The Seventh Annual Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge will take place on July 27th, 2013 at the pier in beautiful Hanalei Bay of north shore Kauai. The swim drew almost 200 swimmers last year of all ages from around the world and is sponsored by the Namolokama O'Hanalei Canoe Club (NCC). NCC President Kawika Dela Sierra said that the club welcomes swimmers, spectators and volunteers to help staff the event. Law Enforcement Regatta "This is the only open water swimming event of its kind on Kauai," Kawika said. "Each year we have more swimmers, more donors, greater enthusiasm, wider par- ticipation by the community and a growing international reputation. We have places for everybody: from fiercely competitive swimmers to those who simply want to challenge themselves to finish. We are most excited this year because our race takes place only one week before the Hawaiian State Regatta Race at the exact location in Hanalei Bay. We are currently working on the details of a Special Trophy to be given to the swimmers of a canoe club. It is rumored that paddlers can certainly move a blade in the water but not their arms & legs… I would like The Law Enforcement Regatta was started in 1988-89 by Gilbert Gaspar, Jr., an officer with the Honolulu Police Department. Every year it takes place on a different island and involves all personnel within the Lae Enforcement field. All monies raised are donated to different charities, the host island determines what charity organization they would like to donate the proceeds to.  2013 will make this event the 25th Annual, is hosted by Kona Police Department, and will benefit the West Hawaii Special Olympics.  This year's regatta will be held on February 16, 2013 (President's Day) weekend as is every year, followed by an awards ceremony and luau.  Each crew entered in an event cost $120.00. The event starts with a 5-mile dis- tance race and "Celebrity Race" which involves a "Special Child or Adult" who can either race against other crews or just be allowed in the canoe during the race.  After that is complete the day moves forward with a regular seasoned regatta race format, starting from novice up into the Master races.  At the end of the day, a paddler may race as many "qualifying" races as they choose as long as the fees are paid for that crew.  It's a day of camaraderie among Law Enforcement personnel with no experience to the regular seasoned paddlers who get together, have fun, and enjoy each others company all while benefiting those who need the help most. to dispel that notion on race day, once and for all". Races include: Keiki 8 and under and 9-12 who swim the length of the Hanalei Pier and back; Youth and adult 1000 meter and 3000 meter race. The longer races take place on a course parallel to the beach at Hanalei. Fees are: Keiki Race $10 ($15 after July 15th) and 1000 & 3000 meter races $30 ($40 after July 15th). First, second & third place medals in each race will be awarded plus ribbons for all finishers. Registration forms will be available at local surf, bike and other retail shops around Kauai as well as at www.hanaleibayswimchallenge.com/. Registration on the day of the event begins at 7 a.m. with the first race taking place at 9 a.m. For additional information call: Gregg Kravitz at 805.657.9454, mobile. Jojo White "It is a great thrill to watch some of the truly great swimmers compete in the longer races," Kawika said, "but my own favorite part of the day is to see the faces of the keiki as they emerge from the water to receive their medals and ribbons. I am very excited this year about the possibility of getting swim participants from the various canoe clubs who can manage to come over a week early for the Regatta races and enter our own Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge." 26 Pacific Paddler - February 2013 http://www.calendarwiz.com/calendars/calendar.php?crd=pacificpaddler& http://www.hanaleibayswimchallenge.com/ http://www.hilobaypaddler.com
