PHOTOS BY CHRIS SILVESTER California Paddling BY CAROL SHICK What do WINTER PADDLING RACES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA look like? Well, for the Pier to Pier OC1/OC-2/Surfksi/SUP/Paddleboard Race in Santa Barbara, CA on January 16th, it looks like an early summer day in Paradise. While the morning broke with a slate grey stretch of clouds in a windless sky and a slight chill in the air, it soon transformed into warm sunrays stretching like fingers through the white wispy clouds, creating a beautiful color palette of shimmering greens and blues on a glassy ocean. The wind and waves did not come to this year's PtP race, but the day was still chock full of fun competitive racing in all divisions (69 entries in the short course and 61 in long course), including quite a few junior division entries. Both the short and long course races took the competitors up the beautiful Santa Barbara coastline to a turn buoy with a return back to the pier for the finish where paddlers gathered to enjoy a postrace lunch of homemade chili provided by the race host, Santa Barbara Outrigger Canoe Club, and talk story in the company of their paddling Ohana.
