The third of nine scheduled Hawaii Island
Paddlesport Association races for 2013 was held
on 2/2/2013. The East Hawaii Challenge had a
new sponsor, Heather Kimball, and a new race
director, Nick AhYo. These two combined their
efforts to produce an enjoyable race for the 78
participants that braved the Hilo winter waters.
It took some patience and excellent wave timing to get everyone safely launched from
Richardson’s Ocean Park. One starting horn had
the long course going upwind for approximately
a mile before turning on an official boat, while
the short courses headed straight downwind

frisky whale lead to one collision during the race. Luckily Afa Tuaolo was not hurt and his canoe sustained only dings, scratches and a few small pukas so he was able to finish the race.

not available for comment, but we assume it was OK after the encounter as well. Trey Cox and Leilani
Shackelford took first in their divisions on the long course. Guy Loa and Kim Rowe took first in their
divisions on the short course.

One traditional HIPA race that everyone looks forward to each season is
Cheryl’s Valentine Relay. This year was the 14th annual, and a record 98 participants were given special T-shirts designed by Cheryl’s mom to commemorate the event.
Proceeds from the race and a lucky number raffle went to the
HIPA Junior program and the Kai Opua Women’s Long Distance programs. This
race starts at the HIPA home grounds of Honokahau Harbor with the first leg
going south to Kamakahonu Beach by the Kailua-Kona Pier. Racers switch off
with their relay partners who then do the return leg back to the harbor. This
year the course was shortened a bit because of the annual Police & Fire OC6
Regatta. This lead to some interesting canoe traffic congestion around the turn
and during the team transitions. The OC2 team of Kim Rowe/Justin Warren and
Sheila Cadaoas/Steve Arnett came in first with an overall time of 1:17:38 with
the 2nd place team of Michael Akau/Noelani Spencer and Maitland Akau/Healani
Leialoha just behind with a time of 1:18:26.
HIPA is also looking forward to assisting with logistics for our members
representing Hawaii Island
and HIPA at the Pailolo and
Kaiwi Channel races. For
