Photo: 83 East The 2nd Annual Race Against Skin Cancer brought together stand-up paddle, sun protection, and skin cancer awareness this weekend in Waikiki, as over 100 SUPers raced to support the University of Hawai'i Cancer Center and the fight against skin cancer. Greeted by clear skies and glassy, ideal conditions, racers of all ages and abilities took on the fast, fun 2.4 mile course from Kaimana Beach to Duke Kahanamoku Beach. Top Men's finishers included overall first place and Unlimited division winner Ed Wheeler (17:03); 14' division winner Kione Dahlin (17:10, defending his 2013 division win); and Stock 12'6" division winner Kaihe Chong (17:13). Top Women's finishers included overall first place and 14' division winner Jenn Lee who successfully defended her 2013 title; Stock 12'6" division winner Kelsa Gabehart 24 Pacific Paddler April 2014 (19:50); and Unlimited division winner Melissa Farnum (38:38). "What an exciting day for the UH Cancer Center, Xcel, and skin cancer awareness," said Marshall Marumoto, Xcel Vice President. "We're thrilled to be able to build on last year's inaugural event and to see the amazing turnout and continued support for our cause." Partners in the ongoing fight against skin cancer, Xcel donates a portion of its UV-protective product proceeds to the UH Cancer Center's Xcel Skin Cancer Prevention Fund, underwriting skin cancer awareness, prevention, and research/educational initiatives. The Race Against Skin Cancer had its inaugural year in 2013. All Race Against Skin Cancer event proceeds benefit the Fund and the UH Cancer Center. "Mahalo to the racers, sponsors, and volunteers who made this day such a success," adds Xcel Marketing Manager Robin Erb. "We're incredibly thankful for the community support and for the opportunity to raise awareness for skin cancer here in Hawai'i and beyond." Racers and spectators took full advantage of race day activities that included free skin cancer screenings by the Hawai'i Skin Cancer Coalition, an awards presentation for top finishers, and an exciting prize drawing for SUP and sun protection gear generously donated by event sponsors. Presented by the Friends of the UH Cancer Center, the 2nd Annual Race Against Skin Cancer was made possible through its sponsors Hui O He'e Nalu (Da Hui), Turtle Bay Resort, Surftech, Kona Red, Standup Paddle Magazine, C4 Waterman, Island Sole, Ty Gurney Surf School, 83 East, Vertra, Maui Jim, and Dakine.
