Kalei Hahookele and Stan Dickson host the awards party KALEI HAHOOKELE Part of the fund-raising efforts by Keahiakahoe Canoe Club was to help Kalei Hahookele get to the Olympics. Later this year, Kalei will be flying to Georgia to train with Team USA before heading to Germany for six weeks of 'Training Camp'. This year Kalei and teammate Aaron Mullican of Georgia will compete in the K2 100 meters. All this training is in preparation for the 2nd World Cup in Duisburg, Germany. There are three qualifier races throughout the year for next year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 2015 is a pre Olympic year, so most of the athletes Kalei will be up against also have an eye on racing in Rio in August 2016. "If we can earn a spot earlier in the year, then we have more time to train, see which combo works best - and who wants it more." To help cover his expenses, Kalei set up a website, "You can donate as much or as little as you want. Everything adds up for sure," he said. Another fund-raiser his supporters plan is a Horse Shoe Tournament at Nanakuli Beach Park. Kelei figures he'll need at least $10,000 to cover meals, boat rentals, lodging, supplements and his airfare. UNCLE GILBERT You know him or you don't. He's either a guy who likes a cookie or Gilbert Silva, the number one man to have around if you're hosting a canoe race or need an OC6 to paddle in. He's got lots of experience and equipment handy to get a canoe ready for racing, whether it's a sprint regatta or a channel crossing. With a large network of clubs and canoes handy, he is the go-to guy for crews who need a canoe. As Keahiakahoe head coach Stan Dickson said at the awards, "We couldn't have done it with out Gilbert. This man has the biggest heart - always getting the job done. What would we do without him?" JUNE 2015 PACIFICPADDLER.COM 33 http://www.PACIFICPADDLER.COM
