KAUAI WORLD CHALLENGE T h e Y M C A / K a u a ' i H o e Wa ' a Association along with Gold Sponsor Captain Andy's Sailing Adventures hosted the 13th Annual Kaua'i World Challenge on Saturday May 9th, 2015. This one of a kind coastal relay race for surf skis, stand-ups, one-man and two-man outrigger canoe paddlers lived up to the "challenge" part of it's name with high winds at 30 knots and 12 foot waves. A total of 69 vessels launched out of Kapaa Beach Park at 8:40 a.m. and commenced a 36 mile relay around the coast of Kauai with partner changes at Hanamaulu Beach Park, Kalapakai Bay and Poipu Beach Park. Paddlers finished at Salt Pond Beach Park. Race Director Tyrus Siale did offer the option to forego the first leg and launch from the second leg Hanamaulu Beach Park if paddlers were not comfortable dodging the big surf sets at Kapa'a Beach Park. Oahu surf ski Team Epkick made up of Pat Dolan and Zsolt Szadovszki were 36 PACIFIC PADDLER JUNE 2015 first to cross the finish line with a time of 3:47:20. Dylan Thomas of Kaua'i along with partner Carter Johnson of California came in second with a time of 4:02:27. Team BCK of Australia consisting of Danny Topfer and Gavin Kleidon were third in the surf ski division with a time of 4:26:13. Team Ah-Kaman-Eww from Oahu made up of Manny Kulukulualani and Travis Grant finished second across the line and first in the men Elite OC-1 division with a time of 3:53:19. Team Kai Wa'a with canoe builder Kai Bartlett of Maui and Will Reichenstein took 2nd in a time of 3:55:11. Rounding out the top three Elite men was team Holy Shirt with Bobby Pratt and Nate Loyola. Team Bradley steerswoman Noe Sawyer of Kaua'i along with teammate Claire Townsend of Oahu came in first in the Elite OC-1 Women with a time of 5:02:48.
