From the Northern star to the southern Hine Moana was the Vaka I sailed aboard to Kauai. The skipper, Magnus Danbolt, is the lead skipper of the fleet on this Pacific Voyage. His crew is made up of sailors from many of the island groups in the Pacific... call it a Pan-Pacific crew. As you can see by the blog...the Vaka fleet may have left Hanalei...but their hearts remain with us...and ours are with them as they continue their journey. I know many readers of your Pacific Paddler Magazine would love to learn more about the Pacific Voyaging Society and keep up with their continuing adventures, as well as supporting the oceanic environmental issues that they are bringing attention to. Mahalo for your support. hine Moana blog Aloha, Nick Beck pacificvoyagers.org /voyaging-societies/hine-moana/ Yesterday, Hine Moana waited for all the vaka to come together. After some hours, as a flock of birds the vaka family with all her beautiful sails out was flying together upon the horizon. And from our beam, as probably the other vaka, we were scanning the horizon with: Oh ! It is Te MATAU there ! Where is Gaualofa ? Probably that one over there so small yet by those clouds, can you see it ! Here is Evohe ! (our escort boat, easy to recognize with her white sails). HINE MOANA also is very easy to recognize since she is the only vaka of the fleet with white sails, while the other vaka have light brown sails. At dawn, a couple of black albatross was resting fifty meters away on our star- board side, as on our port side a white albatross at the same distance was taking its early morning bath. As fat as geese, as HINE got closer, their wings lift their bodies by caressing the air majestically and they just flew away silently towards the north. As a school of birds moving together, the whole fleet has turned towards the Californian coast leaving POLARIS now on our port side. It happened during Thompson’s watch last night, between Latitude 42°and 43°. From Hawaii until now, HOKUPAA the northern star was our focal point in front of us at night. HOKUPAA meaning in Hawaiian the star which stands firm is the star which doesn’t move since she stands by the northern celestial pole.
