The canoes return to Waikiki
The annual Waikiki Beach Boys Regatta is anticipated by paddlers all season long. Crews
race out beyond the breakers and hopefully catch a wave back in without flipping or crashing
their canoes. The steersmen/women have quivers of paddles at their disposal. One blade for
paddling, one for surfing, and one for catching those bombers that sometimes appear breaking at the quarter mile flags. The invitational is part of Na Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a's schedule of
regattas. Today's points didn't go towards the overall Hui Wa'a season tally, but paddlers did
take away medals, trophies and bragging rights. For Manu O Ke Kai, it was an opportunity to
'shaka' the crowds on the beach by flying the ama (below).
Na Kaiki O Ka Mo'i was the overall winner of the day, taking the AAA division with 97
points. Waikiki Beach Boys won the AA division (65) and Kamehameha the A division (27).
