Photos Ropati Dad Center PPtv There are two races leading up to Na Wahine O Ke Kai, Dad Center and E Lau Hoe. Dad Center, hosted by Outrigger Canoe Club, challenges crews in a variety of conditions as the course skirts the Kaiwi Channel on the east side of Oahu. E Lau Hoe is a longer race held on the calmer leeward side of the island. On Aug. 26, canoes launched from Kailua Beach and then lined up between Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands. The fist leg of the race was along the Waimanalo coastline. This section of the course tested 8/26/2012 Forty-seven canoes launched at Kailua Beach, all finished crews with waves that were breaking on the ama side of the canoe, a recipe for a 'huli'. The next section from Makapu'u to Koko Head was unusually organized. The washing machine action normally found at Hanauma Bay entrance was instead lining up perfectly giving (experienced) crews the opportunity to 'hugthe-wall', 'pick ophi' and ride the backwash off the cliff face. The last leg was across Maunalua Bay, around the Diamond Head Bouy and finished in front of Outrigger Canoe Club. Hui Nalu came in first followed by Team Bradley and the Waikiki Beach Boys. Taking fourth overall was Hui Nalu/Revolusun who won the 40's division. Kailua Masters won the 50's finishing 15th overall. The only club to enter a koa canoe was Lanikai White placing 25 out of the pack of 47. After the race, an awards lunch was held at Outrigger Canoe Club, and this year, Hui Nalu drank out of the Dad Center Cup.
