Catalina race Photos by Chris Silvester SCORA closes another fine racing season with an epic Catalina Adventure. We were very honored this year to have as Grand Marshalls Bobby and Johnny Puakea. Craftsmen from both ends of the cultural spectrum- koa carved canoes to carbon-glassed canoes. We were thrilled to have them with us to hand out awards at both Avalon and Newport. This year in addition to the usual suspects, we were embraced in Avalon by the entire city as we took center stage for our awards and recognition ceremony. To top it off, the Kalama Brothers entertained us with a fantastic play list. There was singing and dancing and dusting and merriment! We had teams from Canada, the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, Hawaii, and Chicago join us this year for our annual trek across the pond. Nothing noteworthy of the weather and conditions, but as we move into a new generation of paddlers, we witnessed the ability of navigating a 9-man race within the SCORA unlimited-class canoes. Not to let that style be the end-all, we still saw fast racing from SCORA Spec class racing in the top-3 over the line for the women. Full results can be found at CatalinaCrossing.org. Prior to the Catalina crossing, we had three other great races: the Anacapa Classic hosted by Oxnard canoe and kayak, Oceanside's Paopao 9-man, as well as the Whitey Harrison 9-man hosted by Dana Point OCC. Each of those races giving coaches a chance to race their teams and pull together the best of the rest to make the Catalina Crossing Championships an elite racing event. I've enjoyed this past racing season with SCORA as the association's Race Chair, and I look forward to a fine winter of rest — depending on how the nominations and voting goes in December, I may or may not return as the Race Chair. As always it's a pleasure to be allowed to post our events in the Pacific Paddler magazine.
