Visionary A.E. "Toots" Minvielle proposed the
relief. The crew was steersman; William Wainui,
Molokai to the island of Oahu, across the difficult
paddlers; Bill Foster, Abe Bowman, William Ah Yee,
followed, but in 1952 "Toots" put together the inaugural race. Three intrepid crews would compete and
would become pioneers of one of the world's most
challenging ocean races.
The Waikiki Surf Club, Hawaiian Surf Club, and
a group of Molokai paddlers, Kukui O Lanikaula
Canoe Club, competed in the October 1952 race. It

55 minutes. They paddled the 40-plus miles without
first modern day inter-island canoe race, from
Kaiwi Channel in 1939. Wholesale skepticism

In 46 years, the Molokai Canoe Race has seen
several major changes. Teams are now made up of
nine paddlers, allowing for open ocean changes,
which has become an intricate and exciting element
of the race.
"Toots" Minvielle's vision for the future was
was a modern day epic with three crews, of six
that outrigger canoe racing will continue to grow in
paddlers, pitted against each other. Kakui 0
international prestige, eventually leading to the
Lanikaula of Molokai won in a time of eight hours
sport being part of the Olympics.
