Kailua Bay
Challenge

An iron race for men

Conditions were ripe for a fun race in
Kailua Bay at the 23rd Annual Kailua
Bay Ironman Challenge.

Kailua Canoe Club traditionally hosts this race, just for
men, the day before the women's Dad Center Race.

Two courses were offered up, a 9.5 mile for Novice
and age groups and the 13.5 mile course for the open
men's division.

The race started on the beach. The first leg went out
over the reef. Some canoes took flight as they broke
through, but no one flipped. After going over the reef,
it was a paddle into large swells up to and around
Mōkōlea Rock, (Bird $#!+). From 'Bird' to Moku
Manu (the larger of the two 'Mokes'), the wind and
waves were on the canoes' ama. It was a slog in this
upwind section where waves can lift the ama to the
point of no return. One crew in an Unlimited did flip.
The course took the racers between the Mokes where
some sets were ploughing through the gap. There were
epic rides and a huli, a canoe flipping. After rounding
Moku Iki, it was a half-mile paddle out through ocean
swells to a buoy. After they made the turn, it was a
downwind run back to Kailua Beach for the short
course. The long course had an extra 4-mile race across
the bay to 'Castles', then back upwind to the finish in
front of Kailua Canoe Club's hale.
Thirty-six crews took part in the 'Challenge'. Winning

the short course was Kailua 40's in a time of 1:31:24.
Close behind them were Lanikai's 50's, 1:32:02 and
3rd, Lanikai 55's in 1:33:43. Kailua Juniors won their
division finishing 8th overall in 1:41:58.
In the long course, Kailua was first overall in an

unlimited canoe in 1:32:02. First back in a spec canoe
was Lanikai in 1:38:36.

After the race, Kailua Canoe Club provided lunch,
everyone got a tee-shirt, and Race Director Hank
Leandro gave out awards and prizes.
