Island Iron Canadian Outrigger Heats Up After a cold spring, temperatures in western Canada soared throughout the summer. From May to August, there were six OC6 CORA Cup races, including Nationals, as well as numerous small boat and local races. The sun shone and rivalries between clubs smouldered. British Columbia is home to 27 of the 32 CORA outrigger clubs and is the centre for Canadian out- rigger racing activity. Given the great distances between outrigger clubs within the province, CORA Cup races are held in different regions of BC so as to give clubs on Vancouver Island and in the interior a chance to host a well-attended race, as well as race closer to home. Club races can be point series races some years and other years not, based on the principle of spreading around the wealth, so to speak. Photos by Jim Smith For each race, points are awarded to all gender and age division teams participating, but more points are awarded to teams placing in their categories. National finishes are worth double points and the location of the championships changes every year. At the end of the season, the CORA Cup is awarded to the club with the most overall points regardless of how many winning placements by their teams. In 2013, teams needed to participate in four of the six OC6 Cup races in order to have their points totalled for a standing in their division and added to their club's total for the overall CORA Cup honours. Penticton Racing Canoe Club hosted the first CORA Cup series race in May, Duel in the Desert, a 15 km course on Lake Skaha in the Okanagan Valley in interior BC. It was a hot start to the series for the Pacific Reach men, who beat their main competitors in the races to come, the FCRCC Distance men. The mixed race was a close one, with the home team, PRCC, finishing first. The Lotus Junior men began their domination of the novice category with a win over the local juniors from PRCC and the FCRCC women began the season with a bang. In early June Island Iron was hosted by the Comox Valley Canoe Racing Club on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The women's 18 km race was especially close, with GRPC leading, then FCRCC, then Zoe's Crew, before FCRCC finally took it home for the win and another five CORA Cup points. However, Zoe and friends won the best-dressed award by a mile! In the men's division, the summer long duel between Pacific Reach and FCRCC Distance men was heating up with FCRCC placing first and Pacific Reach third. Survive the Triangle, a 20 km iron race hosted by the Shuswap Association for Paddling and Rowing, was another lake venue. More heat and sun saw interior club teams taking most of the points. Kelowna women posted a win and the Pacific Reach men and PRCC mixed teams also won their respective races. Lotus Iron, hosted by the Lotus Sports Club of Burnaby was held on Indian Arm of Burrard Inlet near Vancouver in late June. It was a cooker for the women with two crews from FCRCC 16 Pacific Paddler December 2013 For a complete report got our digital edition http://www.kaiwaa.com
