Canoe and Sail Surf Session All work no play... Na Holo Kai On July 25th, the 13th Annual Na Holo Kai Outrigger Sailing Canoe Race was held from Haleiwa, Oahu to Poipu, Kauai. The sailing canoes represented the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai. Conditions were less than favorable with tradewinds being almost nonexistent at midchannel. All the crews entered had to paddle most of the way while still trying to take full advantage of what wind they could find. Throughout the entire race, Tui Tonga and Kamakakoa led the field. They took a slightly southerly course from the rumline. Crews with the combination of strong paddlers and seasoned sailors had a distinct advantage under the course conditions. Several participants felt like it was a 65+ mile paddle out of a 90 mile race, and after pushing a 800 lb rig with no crew changes - a few hit the wall. As the canoes approached Kauai, the offshore winds at the southeastern end of the island provided the needed energy for the canoes to sail towards the finish line. Approximately 1500 spectators were at hand to greet the competitors at the end of the race. This year's event was sponsored by NCOCA Champs Our Northern California Outrigger Canoe Association (NCOCA) Sprint Championships were held July 31st at the newly landscaped State Park at Lake Natoma. The site is located approximately 30 miles east of Sacramento on the American River. Typical temperatures easily surpass 100 degrees during that time of year, but on that day they were only in the mid 28 Pacific Paddler, December 1999 to upper 90's - still quite hot for our visiting Bay Area paddlers. The first photo is of our very own Hui 'O Hawaii Sacramento open women's crew making the second of three turns in the Open Women's 2000m event. They went on to place first! This same crew recently completed racing in Canada and Catalina and plan to go Aston Hotel & Resorts, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kauai County. The results: 1 Tui Tonga Kauai 9hrs. 38 min 2 Kamakakoa Kauai 9hrs. 44 min 3 Maka Koa Maui 9hrs. 56 min 4 Kahiau Oahu 10hrs. 10 min 5 Nalu Kauai 10hrs. 27 min 6 Makani Hee Nalu Kauai 10hrs. 33 min 7 Laamaomao Oahu 10hrs. 48 min 8 Koa E Ula Hawaii 10hrs. 58 min 9 Waipualele Maui 10hrs. 58 min 10 Moa E Ku Oahu 11hrs. 30 min to Moloka'i. 2nd Photo. The malia canoe pictured is the "Mata 'Aho," named after the Queen of Tonga (with her blessing of course). We built her in Uncle Bob's backyard over the course of the season. by Michael Nyberg
