WHEN YOU CONSIDER all the healing
that's occurred at Medpoint Health
Care Centre since it opened in 2007,
it's ironic that a few years ago it caused
nothing but headaches and pain for its
husband-and-wife co-founders, Alex
Hanham and Dr. Sylvia Murchison.
In 2018, they sold Medpoint to a
subsidiary of a large multinational
health conglomerate. To say it didn't
go as they expected is like saying the
last two years of pandemic have been a
minor inconvenience.
Plenty of entrepreneurs have sold
their creation to a large corporation
and then rued the changes that followed.
But often those entrepreneurs
have moved on to a new project, using
the profits to launch their next startup.
That wasn't the story at Medpoint.
Hanham and Murchison stayed on,
she continuing as medical director.
They watched as people they'd hired
left; they chafed at the slow pace of
decision-making in the inevitable
bureaucracy of a multi-billion-dollar
corporation; most of all, they prayed for
a chance to reverse their decision and
take back their baby.
On June 1, 2020, they got that chance.
Three months into a global pandemic,
after a series of legal squabbles and
frustrations too numerous to recall,
they got their business back.
" It has taken a while, but today
almost all the staff are back, along with
a lot of the doctors, " Hanham says, as he
gives a tour of the company's Riverbend
Road head office. Sporting jeans, a
colourful topography t-shirt and wellloved
Nike sneakers, he fairly bounces
through the office, greeting (mostly
young) people sitting at desks, working
in alcoves and operating equipment in a
