A new in-home veterinary tech service
provides pet care in a relaxed
environment - and helps ease staff
shortages in the vet field
IF YOUR PET needed veterinary care in the last several
months, you may have been surprised at how long you had
to wait to get an appointment.
Many factors are contributing to the busy schedules and
increased wait times seen at veterinary practices across
the city. Thanks to the pandemic, the pet industry boomed,
with household pet ownership increasing from 67 to 70 per
cent nationally, and consumer spending on our furry family
members hitting an all-time high.
But within veterinary clinics, pandemic protocols,
restrictions and staffing shortages all combined to decrease
the industry's capacity for new and existing patients.
Now, thanks to Paws at Home (www.pawsathomevt.ca),
the London region has a mobile veterinary nursing service
to alleviate some of the pressure on local vets - and to
provide area pet owners with veterinarian nursing care
right in their own homes.

" In a post-Covid world a lot of clients are wanting to do
things at home when they can, " says Dusty Taylor, who
launched Paws at Home this past September. " We have a
lot of stressed pets who aren't used to leaving home. Just
driving in a car is a foreign experience for some of them,
especially cats, and some older dogs have trouble getting
into a car. "
Taylor sees her new business as a helping hand for the
local vet sector. " Veterinarian medicine is overwhelmed
right now. They need their technicians to be available to
assist with surgeries, do x-rays and lab work and take care
of sicker pets - things that cannot be done in the home. "
And Taylor would know, having worked as a technician
in veterinarian practices for 22 years. Earlier this year,
