" I LIKE TO SAY I BRIDGE THE
GAP BETWEEN THE CLINIC
AND THE COUCH " -Dusty Taylor
after the veterinary ophthalmologist she was working for
retired, she began researching the feasibility of opening
her own business - one that would enable her to continue
doing work she loves to do.
" I discovered another technician in Barrie who was
providing mobile veterinary nursing care, and I realized
that we didn't have this in London, " she explains. To test
the waters, she reached out to local vets to inform them of
her services, and now many of them refer Paws at Home to
their clients on a regular basis.
Paws at Home functions somewhat like an extension of
a regular vet clinic. Services range from administering
medications or injections and providing post-operative
care to nail trimming, ear cleaning and assistance with
an aging pet or one with special medical needs.
Taylor's first client, Jodi Simpson, learned about Paws at
Home from her vet.
" My dog was facing a life-threatening kidney failure
prognosis and required an aggressive treatment of daily
fluid injections, similar to dialysis. I was overwhelmed and
stressed out, and Dusty was referred to me by my vet to
help me administer this daily treatment, " says Simpson.
" I think this service is a game-changer - especially given
the shortage of vets and access to help for our furry pets. "
" I like to say I bridge the gap between the clinic and the
couch, " says Taylor. " As a veterinary technician I work
under the direction of a vet and will always send a report
back to the vet after seeing a pet. I don't do any formal
assessments or diagnostics, but I'm part of the veterinarian
team working to ensure that pets are receiving the best
possible care. "
That might mean taking vital signs and monitoring blood
glucose levels for diabetic pets or offering a listening ear
and sharing observations that can help guide a pet owner's
decision-making process. Taylor is also a certified canine
massage therapist and is completing training in palliative
animal care.
" Eventually my goal is to have a team of veterinary
technicians, " she says. " With veterinarian medicine as
busy as it is, we need more options for pet care. "
