CLINICAL CONGRESS NEWS
Join the ACS History and Archives Committee
for surgical history programs
This year's Virtual Clinical
Congress will feature a number
of opportunities for attendees
to engage in programming and
learn more about surgical history.
The American College of Surgeons (ACS)
History and Archives Committee (HAC)
is sponsoring a History of Surgery Poster
Session again this year. Because of significant
increases in abstract submissions
over the last several years, the session
has expanded to include e-Posters.
Twenty traditional posters presented by
fellows, residents, and medical students
highlight unique surgical stories from
ancient to modern times. Judging will
take place virtually, and the first- and
second-place winners will be announced
during the History of Surgery Community
" Breakfast " Meeting, 4:30-5:45 pm
Central Time Monday, October 18. All
20 posters and presentations, along with
the selected e-Posters, will be available
on the Clinical Congress virtual meeting
site for viewing.
Along with updates on HAC activities,
this year's guest lecturer at the " Breakfast "
will be David S. Jones, MD, PhD, the A.
Bernard Ackerman Professor of the Culture
of Medicine, Harvard University, Boston,
MA, who will speak about his research on
coronary bypass graft surgery. A questionand-answer
segment will follow the
presentations, during which attendees can
interact with the speaker or other surgical
history enthusiasts. This session is open to
all with free registration here. Check Clinical
Congress News emails for details in the
coming weeks. This session also will be
available on the Clinical Congress virtual
meeting site for on-demand viewing.
Other history-related sessions this year
are as follows.
The Charles G. Drake History of Surgery
Lecture will take place at 1:00 pm
Central Time Monday, October 25. This
lecture has been a fixture at the Clinical
Congress since it was established by the
Advisory Council for Neurological Surgery
in 1992. This year's lecturer is Edward C.
Benzel, MD, FACS, emeritus chairman of
neurosurgery, Cleveland Clinic (CC), and
professor of neurological surgery at the
Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine,
OH. He is director, career development,
and patient experience officer
in the CC Neurological Institute. He will
speak on The Evolution of Modern-Day
Spine Surgery: Conflict, Compromise,
and Collaboration.
A Panel Session sponsored by the HAC,
The Rude Unhinging of the Machinery
of Life: The Surgical History of Shock,
will take place at 9:00 am Central
Time Wednesday, October 27. This
session will describe the contributions
of surgeons to our understanding of
the pathophysiology of shock and
the evolution of treatment. Surgeons
have always been intimately involved
in every aspect of critical illness and
the shock state, playing a key role in
the understanding of this complex
condition, and they have made key
historical contributions in this area. Each
panelist will cover historical milestones to
provide a comprehensive review of how
scientific rigor, personal perseverance,
and dedication to patient care were

tive Standards for Cancer Surgery manuals,
developed through the American College
of Surgeons Cancer Research Program (ACS
CRP), highlight evidence-based techniques
and recommendations for surgical oncologists.
The Commission on Cancer has adopted six of
these operative standards into its accreditation
program, which will be implemented in more
than 1,500 institutions in the U.S.
Sponsored by the ACS CRP and moderated
by Matthew H.G. Katz, MD, FACS,
Chair, ACS Cancer Surgery Standards Program
(CSSP), and Kelly K. Hunt, MD, FACS,
Vice-Chair, CSSP, the Technical Standards
for Cancer Surgery: Bringing Evidence into
Practice Didactic Course is focused on the
transition from the evidence used to develop
the operative standards to the day-to-day
application of the standards in surgical practice.
Participants in this longitudinal course
will view prerecorded presentations and
pertinent resources and participate in a live
interactive discussion at 9:00 am Central Time
Tuesday, October 26. A follow-up discussion
will be held approximately six weeks after
Virtual Clinical Congress 2021.
Prerecorded talks by CSSP Executive Committee
Member Sandra L. Wong, MD, FACS,
chair of surgery and the William N. and Bessie
Allyn Professor of Surgery at the Geisel School
of Medicine, Dartmouth College, Hanover,
NH, and Thomas A. Aloia, MD, FACS,
vice-president and director, surgical oncology,
Ascension, Houston, TX, focus on data
supporting the use of technical standards and
considerations in the context of value-based
care. Karl Y. Bilimoria, MD, FACS, vice-president
for quality and clinical integration,
Northwestern Medicine; and vice-chair for
quality, department of surgery, and the John
B. Murphy Professor of Surgery, Northwestern
University Feinberg School of Medicine,
Chicago, IL, discusses how surgeons can use
operative standards and outcome metrics to
improve surgical quality. Elizabeth G. Grubbs,
MD, FACS, professor, department of surgical
oncology, division of surgery, The University of
Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston,
TX, demonstrates that operative standards can
be an important part of education for surgical
trainees; by focusing on adherence to evidence-based
standards, surgical trainees enter
the workforce with strong technical skills.
The live interactive discussion with course
participants and speakers will be led by Judy
C. Boughey, MD, FACS, CSSP Executive
Committee Member, the W.H. Odell Professor
of Individualized Medicine, professor
of surgery, and chair, division of breast and
melanoma surgical oncology at Mayo Clinic,
Rochester, MN; Fabian Johnston, MD, MHS,
FACS, division chief, gastrointestinal oncology,
and associate professor of surgery, Johns
Hopkins Medicine, Baltimore, MD; Nicole
Lopez, MD, CRP Dissemination and Implementation
Committee Member, associate
professor of surgery, University of California
San Diego; and Heidi Nelson, MD, FACS,
Medical Director, ACS Cancer Programs.
This course represents an opportunity to
learn how to take technical standards from
theoretical constructs to fundamental components
of surgical practices and programs. *
