International Conference Offers Valuable Insights, Diverse

he ATS 2024 International
Conference, taking place
May 17-22 in San Diego,
will feature educational
programming that
provides attendees with
cutting-edge research
and impactful insights
into clinical, basic, and
translational science in
pulmonary, critical care,
and sleep medicine.
The theme for this
year's basic science
core curriculum will be
exploring multi-omics to
mechanisms elucidating
the pathobiology of lung
diseases.

AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST WILL TAKE CENTER
stage at the Opening Ceremony of the ATS 2024
International Conference in San Diego.
That's not a joke. All eyes will be on William Flanary,
MD, aka satirist Dr. Glaucomflecken, as the featured
speaker at the ceremony, 4:30-5:30 p.m. PT on
Saturday, May 18.
" It's going to be great. There's going to be stuff

about hearts, lungs, and anything else you can find
in the human thorax, " Dr. Flanary said in a video
announcing his participation in the conference. " I'm
going to be talking about a lot of different things: the
importance of humor and medicine, social media,
and that one time that I, an ophthalmologist, actually
ended up in the ICU. "
Dr. Glaucomflecken (@DGlaucomflecken) began on
X, formerly Twitter, as a creative outlet for Dr. Flanary
to tell jokes about ophthalmology and to help him
cope with his experience as a two-time survivor of
testicular cancer and a survivor of cardiac arrest at
age 34 in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. He
has become a popular social media personality at the
center of medical-themed comedy shorts that find
humor in the challenges of medical school, residency,

will try to bridge the applications
of this technology into
the basic science area,
but also into
the clinical
space. "
The

conference
will also
feature a
Keynote
Series
presentation
addressing
various
applications
of artificial
intelligence (AI) in medicine
and the potential biases of this
technology in its current state
- one of several presentations
discussing AI. The session will
feature a panel of
experts moderated
by Google Chief
Clinical Officer
Michael Howell,
MD, MPH.
" I think the
emergence of AI
is simultaneously
exciting and
terrifying, " Dr.
Boyer said. " It
has tremendous
potential to help us with our
workloads, make decisions, and
process data faster, but there
are also valid concerns about the
reliability of results generated from
AI. That's why we wanted to program
multiple sessions about AI this
year, including one of our Keynote
sessions, because I think almost
everybody is excited and nervous
about it. "
Another Keynote Series session
will trace the history of mechanical
ventilation in medicine. Author,
critical care doctor, and researcher
Hannah Wunsch, MD, MSc, chronicled
the development of mechanical
ventilation techniques in the
autumn of 1952 during a polio
epidemic in her book, The Autumn
