BURDEN, ECONOMIC IMPACT AND RESEARCH GAPS: KEY FINDINGS FROM THE PAN-EUROPEAN STUDY ON DIGESTIVE DISEASES AND CANCERS
* Alcohol-related liver disease and other chronic
liver diseases, digestive cancers, IBD, IBS and
pancreatitis, amongst others, were highlighted as
areas of prioritisation by the national societies
Several areas were pinpointed as priorities, with
research to investigate alcohol-related liver disease
and other chronic liver diseases, digestive cancers,
IBD, IBS and pancreatitis, together accounting for
over 70% of the priorities identified by
the societies.
This finding correlates with the trends identified
in relation to the funding and research of several
of these diseases, indicating long-term trends in
underinvestment for these diseases within EU
funding programmes.
* A lack of information exists regarding the
financial burden of digestive diseases and cancers
Currently, a lack of studies exists regarding the
economic burden of digestive diseases and
cancers. This area must, therefore, be prioritised in
order for nations to make impactful and effective
decisions on cost-effective spending.
* Prevention research is an underexamined area
The top three research topics identified for
prioritisation were drug therapy, diagnosis and
prevention research. While many publications were
classified as drug therapy and diagnostic research,
there were far fewer publications classified as
prevention research, despite the importance of this
area in tackling disease burden.
Prevention research in all its aspects, including
primary prevention, molecular mechanisms,
secondary prevention (such as screening) and
implementation research, therefore, represents an
important area for prioritisation and a promising
avenue for development.
Over
70%
of the research priorities
identified were geared
towards alcohol-related liver
disease and other chronic liver
diseases, digestive cancers,
IBD, IBS and pancreatitis
