" I was mesmerised with the complexity and broad scope of
gastroenterological surgery already during my last years as a medical
student. I felt that gastroenterological surgery was the soul of surgery
and other specialties felt too focused for me. After all, GE-surgery spans
huge variety of operations from day case hernias to complex HPB and
transplant surgeries. Further, GE-surgery was not just about operating,
it also included a lot of diagnostics, endoscopy and conservative
treatment options which made it a perfect fit for me. Of course, a lot of
this inspiration has come from numerous mentors and teachers who
have been invaluable during my path. Although my clinical career has
progressed towards HPB and Transplant, I've still been able to maintain
that broad enthusiasm in my research work.
I am truly honoured to have been recognised as a UEG Rising Star 2021.
When I look at who has received the award this year or in the past, I feel
truly humbled to be part of that group. The UEG Rising Star awardees
are truly the top experts in the field of gastroenterology.
Our research group will continue to provide the scientific community
with the highest quality evidence on topical and controversial issues in
GE-surgery. Our work will remain mostly clinical, but we will continue to
expand our network with translational and basic research laboratories
to achieve the most out of our clinical trials. The focus will remain in
randomised controlled trials aiming to reduce surgical complications,
but basic epidemiological work will also be needed to generate
hypothesis. The ultimate goal for any hospital should be that all patients
are included in a clinical trial, so that in the future we have better, safer
and more efficient treatments available. "
