Acting as the united voice of European Gastroenterology
towards the public and policy makers
2021 has marked important achievements in the work of the
Public Affairs Committee, with key activities that brought increased
interest and attention towards digestive health in the EU
arena and beyond, advancing our community's cause one step
further.
One major milestone was the Launch of the European Parliament
Interest Group on Digestive Health (MEP Digestive Health
Group)
under the chairmanship of MEP Antonio Tajani,
former President of the European Parliament. We received the
support of 13 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), from
11 different countries, who pledged to uphold digestive health
on the EU political agenda and foster favorable policy change.
For our annual campaigns, Digestive Health Month (May) and
Pancreatic Cancer Day (November 18) we were also pleased to
receive the support of MEPs who joined the awareness raising
activities by speaking up on the most pressing issues.
Moreover, together with one of the supporters within the MEP
Digestive Health Group, MEP Sarah Wiener, we successfully co-organised
a series of webinars entitled ''Understanding the Human
Microbiome'' where we discussed: The link to obesity and liver
disease
; The impact of ultra-processed foods
and Cancer
and the Gut microbiome . Each event was joined by an
average of 50 attendees from the European Health community,
the European Commission and national ministries.
