We provide a comprehensive selection of awards, fellowships,
and prizes to contribute to the personal and professional development
of trainees and established gastroenterologists and
hepatologists.
Research Prize
UEG awards €100,000 each year for excellence in basic science,
translational or clinical research. The prize is awarded to
well-established researchers at the height of their active career,
whose science has had, or will have, a crucial impact on digestive
health.
Dirk Haller was awarded the distinguished UEG Research Prize
2021 for his outstanding project " Repurposing mitochondria-protective
targets for adjuvant IBD therapy " .
The exciting and novel vision of his proposal is to repurpose
mitochondria-protective therapeutics to develop proof-of-concept
for novel adjuvant strategies in IBD. In the outlined research
project, he aims to define the effect of mitochondria-protective
molecules in IBD patient derived organoids and mouse models.
For this purpose, he and his team apply different classes of drugs
already applied for the treatment of mitochondrial diseases
and repurpose their activities to enhance regenerative tissue
responses after inflammation-related injury of the intestinal
epithelium.

UEG Lifetime Achievement Award
Michael Farthing was awarded the renowned UEG Lifetime
Achievement Award. Professor Michael Farthing has made
an outstanding and lasting contribution to gastroenterology,
academia and professional societies including UEG. He has had a
career-long commitment to international medicine, including in
low-income geographical locations. While Professor of Gastroenterology
at Barts and the London Medical School, he led one of
