The St. Pete Pier, located along the St.
Petersburg downtown waterfront, is composed
of 26 acres (10.5 ha), with five acres
(2 ha) over open water. The revamped pier
is the result of a 15-year planning process
marked by extensive public input. It consists
of a beach, playground, splash pad, five
dining concepts, an environmental education
center, a market, event spaces, a waterfront
promenade, public art, and acres of green
space. St. Pete Pier hosts over 80 events
each year, attracts more than 2.3 million visitors,
and generates $125 million for the local
economy.
By 2004, the pier support structure, with
1926-era pilings, was deteriorating badly.
This started the process to redevelop this
important community asset. The St. Pete Pier,
eighth in city history, reflects the city's mandate
to preserve the waterfront in perpetuity.
A community group identified 10 key elements,
including fishing, observation, dining,
shopping, playground, marine education,
and event space. The central spine creates a
pedestrian experience from what had been
a vehicle-oriented roadway. A redesigned
entrance connects the downtown to a new
solar-covered marketplace, leading visitors to
the family park.
That park is the heart of the Pier District,
with a central plaza and a multipurpose lawn
space with a floating sculpture designed by
renowned artist Janet Echelman. A marinethemed
children's playground, a café, a
beach, and a splash fountain abut the
adjoining plaza. Stormwater management
swales and pond diversify the landscape,
attract wildlife, cool the surroundings, and
purify the water. The Coastal Thicket was
envisioned as an overwater experience that
evokes the coastal wilderness as visitors find
a sense of wonder, exploration, and delight.
The jury lauded St. Pete Pier for exemplifying
a shift toward community-oriented
planning processes to produce a reimagining
of a local landmark designed to meet community
needs and improve the sustainability
of the pier. UL
St. Pete Pier was integral to the St. Petersburg Downtown Waterfront
Master Plan, with its vision " to protect, enhance, and promote St.
Petersburg's downtown waterfront as one of the premier waterfront
destinations and attractions in the United States. "
