Looking toward the Future
The ULI Foundation
is intrinsically linked
with the ability of the
Institute to deliver on its
mission of shaping the
future of the built environment for transformative
impact in communities
worldwide. Not only
does the Foundation
raise the funds that are
critical to strengthening
Ed Walter
and expanding programs
ULI Global Chief Executive Officer
such as UrbanPlan and
Advisory Services, it also acts as a focal point
for our mission impact, bringing together
members' time and talent to deliver lasting
change in our communities. Over the past 50
years, the ULI Foundation has raised more
than $135 million to support ULI's missionled work, and last year alone, thanks to the
generosity of our members, we raised over
$9 million from individual and institutional
donors to continue funding our communityshaping impact.
As we look beyond the current pandemic,
we believe there is even more potential to
increase the resources available and focus
them where they will make the biggest difference. To help us achieve this objective,
we have recently appointed Janice Periquet
as the new president of the ULI Foundation,
where she will oversee all aspects of the
Foundation's comprehensive fundraising
strategy and execution. Janice has over 25
years of fundraising experience, with expertise across major and planned gifts, annual
funds, and foundation grants and has been
a part of three separate billion-dollar campaigns, from design to implementation. You
can find an interview with Janice discussing
our plans for the ULI Foundation on page 26
of this issue.
Elsewhere at ULI, we also are looking forward to the gradual return to more normal
operations once the pandemic subsides. Over

the past year, we have been focused on supporting you by finding new ways to connect
members in a virtual world and by providing
timely and applicable insights that can help
your business succeed. At the same time,
we have always had one eye on the future,
assessing which of the new programs and
technologies we have introduced in response
to the pandemic we will retain to further
strengthen our membership proposition.
As we return to in-person events later in the
year, we intend to continue activities such as
the enhanced webinar series in each of our
three regions, as well as the recently launched
ULI OnPoint, a live online discussion with
expert panelists discussing the latest developments in geopolitics and the economy followed by a deep dive into a specific industry
segment. We also are actively exploring ways
in which our major global events can continue
to incorporate a virtual element to enable a
wider audience to participate in and benefit
from the events' content.
We have a busy calendar of online events
over the next few months. Our Spring Meeting in May will once again be a virtual event
combining online networking and virtual
tours with extensive programming that will
include leading keynote speakers such as
Bozoma Saint John, chief marketing officer
at Netflix, and Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser at Allianz and president of
Queens' College, Cambridge. The Asia Pacific
Summit, also in May, will combine an extensive online program with a small-scale inperson event in Tokyo for members based in
Japan. While we know there is no substitute
for the experience of meeting in person, we
believe that these events will continue to provide high-quality content alongside valuable
networking opportunities.
At the heart of our virtual offering is an
extensive program of webinars across all
three regions, which showcase ULI's latest
research reports or bring together senior
leaders to tackle topics that are most relevant
