Under the Sea
Because of their rarity and technical difficulty,
caves in Florida comprise but a fraction of
the state's diving opportunities. Most divers
and snorkelers take to the open water in
the Sunshine State, many converging in
Northwest Florida, where dive sites off the
coastlines of Panama City Beach, South
Walton and Destin include limestone ledges
covered in corals and sponges as well as
intentionally sunk airplanes, tugs, army tanks
and towers serving as artificial reefs that are
accepted by teeming schools of fish and
other colorful undersea life.

In Pensacola, a long military history
continues below the waves in reefs created
from former naval vessels like the U.S.S.
Oriskany-known as the "Mighty O"-which
served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. The
ship proved to be just as mighty after being
decommissioned, becoming the largest
vessel ever sunk to make a reef.
Recent archaeological discoveries have
yielded something else under the water
in Pensacola-the third shipwreck from
the fleet of Spanish explorer Don Tristan
de Luna, who traveled from Veracruz,
Mexico to Pensacola Bay (then called
Ochuse) in 1559 and commenced building
a settlement at what is now known as
Emanuel Point. Luna's fledgling colony was
wiped out by a hurricane shortly thereafter,
and a search for the fallen ships has been
under way ever since.

Recent excavations on land have
narrowed down the location of the original
Luna settlement, making it the oldest such
colony on U.S. soil. Ongoing excavations from
the University of West Florida and the Florida
Bureau of Archaeological Research promise
more exciting discoveries on the horizon.
