The Caribbean, The Bahamas & Bermuda 2011 Guide - (Page 29)

Authentic CARIBBEAN There are far-flung tropical spots that have everything that more popular and celebrated destinations flaunt—except on a smaller scale. Anguilla, Grenada and St. Kitts & Nevis, come foremost to mind. These islands may not be as fêted, but they cling to a Caribbean lifestyle and traditions that disappeared from more popular destinations long ago. Anguilla It’s Spanish for “eel” because not too imaginative explorers named it. Today, this photogenic island of only 14,000 residents has plenty of upscale resorts and a disproportionate number of golf courses. It’s imbued with a genuine flavor and its 38 miles of white-sand beaches form a pleasing contrast against sapphire waters. + Anguilla is a ribbon of land only 17 miles long and three miles wide at its broadest point. Hiking paths wind across rock formations, through strange shrubs and low rises with spectacular views. Many of the hiking trails are over abandoned roads cut when many nowforgotten building projects were begun. + Every beach on the island is public property, but the west end has the best sands. Most beaches front luxury properties, but no one is denied entrance. + Divers in particular will find that Anguilla offers a thrill a minute. Diving here is centered around wreck diving, with five wrecks, including a Spanish galleon, lying in shallow waters. + There are seven marine parks: DOG ISLAND, PRICKLEY PEAR, SEAL ISLAND REEF SYSTEM, LITTLE BAY, SANDY ISLAND, SHOAL BAY HARBOUR REEF SYSTEM and STONEY BAY MARINE PARK. + The ANGUILLA HERITAGE TRAIL will open this May and runs along 10 historical sites, selected by public vote, that reflect the island’s rich and colorful past. + Mountain bike riding is a favorite activity for visitors. Marl roads, that seem tailor-made for riding, abound and all offer spectacular sights along the way. Many resorts offer the use of bicycles for their guests. HOTEL HIGHS: CUISINART RESORT AND SPA on Rendezvous Bay; the ANACAONA BOUTIQUE in the trendy West End. Kayaking in Nevis. Grenada Grenada looms like a diminutive landmass rising from the sea some 125 miles northeast of Venezuela. It is a tropical haven that can’t be dismissed as just another typical Caribbean resort destination. It’s a compact volcanic landmass of a mere 133 sq. miles dotted with allinclusive resorts and deemed as the most beautiful island within the Grenadines, the southern part of the Windward Islands. + Grenada consists of a series of rugged spectacular volcanic ridges blanketed with dense, lush tropical foliage and has no lack of attractive places custom-made for a seaside stay. + There are spectacular hiking trails leading to the GRAND ETANG RAINFOREST. The journey unwinds over a steep winding road up to almost 2,000 ft. where hikers descend through nutmeg, cocoa and banana plantations to a pool under seven sets of waterfalls. + Sailing enthusiasts can cruise offshore waters in regular day trips with local sailors who specialize in leisure excursions to Grenada’s harbors and nearby islets. Food and drinks are usually provided. + Tours to rum distilleries is a must in Grenada, where rum making is an art form. Some spice plantations and rum distilleries offer public tours and rum samples. HOTEL HIGHS: CALABASH on Prickly Bay; LASOURCE on Pink Gin Beach.
