The San Jose Convention Center is presently
undergoing a $120 million expansion and renovation project scheduled for completion in the fall. The modernist addition adds 125,000 sf of flexible space for a combined total of 550,000 sf in the center of the city. Its surrounded by San Jose State University, San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, The Tech Museum, leafy green parks and an inordinate amount of restaurants for a city this size. Seriously. There are over 150 places to grab a bite within a 10-minute walk. Although, if it were us, we’d head a few blocks north to the Smoking Pig BBQ Company for their beef brisket slow smoked for 14 hours over hardwood oak and apple woods. They’re in the new 2013 San Francisco Michelin Guide. Back at the Convention Center, they did some cool things sustainably speaking. The new building is located on the site of the old MLK Library, which was demolished to make room. Over 95% of the demo material (about 1,300 truckloads) was recycled onsite to build the new foundation. That will help Team San Jose and the developer in their bid to earn LEED Silver certification. The expansion will include a 35,000-sf Grand Ballroom, 39,000 sf of flexible meeting space, and new outdoor event space. FYI: Smoking Pig does catering! sanjose.org
