Broadmoor Cloud Camp Corporate Retreats Different types of venues-from wilderness lodges to country inns-have their own unique appeal for high-level executive retreats A BY BARBARA SCOFIDIO Ask planners what qualities they look for in a property for a highlevel retreat and a few will always rise to the top. Exclusivity is essential-a hotel where each visitor is treated as if he or she is the only guest. The facility should be top-notch, the F&B of the highest quality, the WiFi flawless. Privacy is paramount. And the staff should be skilled at servicing high-powered and often demanding clients. After all, this is no ordinary group. Depending on the need for proximity to a city or the desire to escape to a more secluded setting, the following properties present 10 very different options for high-level retreats. TARRYTOWN HOUSE ESTATE & CONFERENCE CENTER A country mansion close to the city with the Hudson River serving as its majestic backdrop, the 212-room Tarrytown House is just 25 minutes from Manhattan. Billing itself as "the nation's first conference center," it is certified by the International Association of Conference Centers to offer a distraction-free, dedicated meeting environment with top-notch tech. There's even a 24-hour technology resource center. CLOUD CAMP AT THE BROADMOOR Inspiration at 9,000 feet is what The Broadmoor's new Cloud Camp is all about. The 8,000-sf lodge (which has 7 guest rooms, along with 11 one- and two-bedroom cabins) sits on the site of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose's Cheyenne Lodge, a magical spot with 36-degree mountain views. But it's anything but roughing it. A popular-and symbolic-activity for retreat groups is a trip to the summit of Cheyenne Mountain, either by a guided hike, four-wheel drive or mule. PINEHURST & KIAWAH ISLAND Say the words "golf resort" and Pinehurst springs to mind. This summer, the resort added its 9th course-appropriately named Pinehurst No. 9-formerly National Golf Club's Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course. Many people are not aware that in addition to the classic 234-room Carolina Inn, the resort's main hotel, Pinehurst has two smaller inns: the 42-room Manor Inn and the 82-room Holly Inn. It's typical for about 75 percent of group business to include a golf outing component, according to Eric Kuester, director of group sales. "Some high-end groups do 1-on-1 instruction from our team at the Pinehurst Golf Academy, which includes one of golf's top 50 instructors in Eric Alpenfels, and Kelly Mitchum, who has played in four PGA Championships and more than 100 PGA Tour events." Another classic golf destination is Kiawah Island, which Lisa Edmunds Neylon, Meeting Expectations' global sales and sourcing manager, will use next spring for an executive retreat for a prevuemeetings.com | 31 31-34_Corp Retreats.indd 31 1/8/15 6:55 AM http://www.prevuemeetings.com
