MANCHESTER Two hours by train north of London, Manchester has been building one of the most innovative and sustainably-minded urban cores in the world. NOMA is a new district designed as a city of the future, integrating new buildings among the historic neighborhoods. One Angel Square, the new HQ for the developers of NOMA, opened last year with the highest ever BREEAM rating (Europe's equivalent of LEED certification). The BBC calls it the greenest building in the world. With projects such as NOMA, the world-class MediaCity tech and entertainment district, and one of Europe's leading scientific universities, Manchester is leveraging its academic expertise and facilities for large scale events. "International meetings are all about intensive debate and discussion, bringing the world's leading minds together to discuss a HOME Manchester 38 | prevue magazine particular topic," says Anthony Cassidy, international sales manager for Visit Manchester. "Through identifying those industry sectors, academic subjects and local experts, whereby Manchester truly stands out on a global stage, we can highlight those opportunities for international congresses. Presently under development, HOME is a new group venue dedicated to the visual arts, theater and film. It will open in the spring of next year with a 500-seat theater, 150-seat studio space/ theater, and 5,500-sf gallery open for events. For dining, there will be two restaurants seating 150 and 200. Another meeting-specific venue with an outdoor terrace will seat 100 diners. The beloved Manchester Central Library has reopened following an extensive refurbishment and extension. Visitors are invited to pop in to relax and unwind in the city's "living room," or be inspired in new spaces such the Henry Watson Music Library and the BFI Mediatheque. Whitworth Art Gallery is currently undergoing major work to extend and double the public space of the gallery into leafy Whitworth Park. The gallery will reopen this fall with a major exhibition from acclaimed British sculptor Cornelia Parker.
