THE DANES [ON LOCATION] KATHERINE MANFREDI, CMM DINNER WITH With Scandinavian cuisine the toast of the world’s foodie elite, we check out what’s cooking in Copenhagen. C lydesdale carriage rides, brewery tours and tastings, outdoor cafes and indoor bars—all as expected at Carlsberg Museum & Business Center, located 15 minutes from downtown Copenhagen. Unexpected, there’s a statuary garden and lawn for up to 1,000 guests, fine art and a range of elegant to functional conference rooms for 12-400 in a museum setting. It was here where Winston Churchill met his Danish counterpart. Delegates will sample more than good beer in Denmark. Copenhagen is home to the impossible-to-book Noma, awarded San Pellegrino’s “World’s Best Restaurant” nod three years running. It put all of Scandinavia on the culinary map, where farm-to-table and fine dining mean the same thing. Historic charm and beer culture infuses events throughout the brewery, museum, visitors center and cobblestone courtyard. For example, The Jacobsen Brewhouse & Bar hosts receptions up to 600 alongside giant copper brewery vats. The standard A/V and WiFi access are welcome inclusions to meeting packages. Showcasing the original brewery owners’ extensive art collection, a dozen or so rooms configure for prefunction, reception and dining. Museum quality artworks suffuse each room with its own character and historical significance, like the stately Empress Hall, featuring exquisite sculptures, skylights, an intriguing winter garden and koi pond. It is particularly enchanting and perfectly suited for receptions up to 100 or dinners to 40. The larger 1,600-sf Dipylon Hall holds 170 for meetings, 400 for receptions. Use all rooms in the museum center for receptions to 12,000. BELLA SKY: HOTEL OF THE FUTURE A polar opposite to the historic Carlsberg setting, the 812room Bella Sky Comwell is an ultramodern, V-shaped twin tower with a massive wind turbine planted out front. Next to the Bella Center convention facility, this is Scandinavia’s largest hotel and conference facility. With its own train station onsite, it’s only five minutes from the airport and eight minutes to the city center. One of several fashionable restaurants, Sky Bar offers a lofty view 23 stories up. They have an iconic “PH Grand Piano” (designed by Poul Henningsen with a distinctive clear lid), excellent champagne vintages and a casually chic atmosphere. Lunch is the national dish Smørrebrød—open-face sandwiches with endless varieties of toppings from moose to mackerel. The clean, stark whiteness of the Bella Sky’s interior is contrasted with a towering waterfall of greenery growing upward as an oxygen-enriching wall. Splashes of vivid colors punctuate the sleek Danish furniture pieces, which are modern 64 | prevue magazine
