LAKE PLACID LODGE Fresh air meetings & spirited adventure in the Adirondacks [ON LOCATION] LAUREL HERMAN P erfect for corporate meetings and idyllic retreats, the 30-room Lake Placid Lodge has magical views of the lake and Whiteface Mountain. A 90-minute drive north of Albany International Airport in upstate New York, the Lake Placid area is part of Adirondack Park, encompassing 46 mountains over 4,000 feet high and over 3,000 lakes. In fact, the park contains 85% of the entire wilderness in the Eastern U.S., the largest east of the Mississippi. This part of the world is really pristine and it’s sure to please groups looking for a natural escape. I sat with Ann Graham, director of sales/marketing and asked about some of the Relais & Chateaux property’s special selling points for corporate meetings and retreats. “You know Laurel, we specialize in privacy for our clients so I can’t tell you which companies have come here, but I can tell you that truly everything is unique about this luxury resort destination,” she says, smiling proudly around at our surroundings. “We create extraordinary meetings here; nothing cookie cutter and no two meetings are the same. Corporate groups come here and want something different so we constantly get creative.” Teambuilding activities are available all year long and there are a bunch of choices. In summer and fall, group activities are centered on the lake aboard a number of different boats. Graham says a lot of groups also set out for hiking, biking and picnics along the many miles of trails in the pristine forests just outside the Lodge’s doorstep. Wintertime group activities beneﬁt from the extensive facilities built here for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Planners can create an Olympic-style event at the Olympic Center & Lake Placid Olympic Museum. Former Olympians are on hand to help with coaching duties for hockey, skiing, and even introductory ski jumping into a pool in summer. “Olympic trainers create really personalized programs for our groups,” says Graham. “Guests tell us that they love Lake Placid Lodge because to get a real perspective of their company, they need to leave it. So we’re always happy to give them that escape and privacy.” THE LODGE ON THE LAKE All of the guestrooms feature individual design and decor, although they all have natural stone ﬁreplaces, super comfy bedding, luxury amenities and those truly spectacular lake views from either balconies or porches. Each room features the handiwork of local Adirondack artisans, such as the carved beds and furniture, along with lovely artwork and antiques. All together, there are seven rooms in the main lodge, six lakeside suites and 17 lakeside or mountainview cabins.
