you'll want to head straight to Ko, or
Konigsallee, a veritable catwalk lined by
beautiful old chestnut trees that's known
as the heart of this fashion city. Those who
like to take a step back in time will want to
venture off to Carlstadt, an idyllic quarter
of antique shops, and the Old Town,
with a laid-back charm and
unconventional boutiques, as well as
pubs, bars and clubs (there's a reason
it's known as "the longest bar in the
world"). Did you know that the city is
home to Europe's third-largest Japanese
community; its vibrant Japanese quarter
is centered around Hotel Nikko on
Immermannstrasse, with Japanese
supermarkets, bookshops, and
restaurants. Located in the trendy Media
Harbor district on a peninsula on the
Rhine, the Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf
offers some fabulous views. It's also
minutes from Old Town and there's a
complimentary weekend shuttle service to
the Konigsallee shopping district.

To The PorT We Go
In northern Germany, you'll find
HAMBURG, a gorgeous seafaring hub
and maritime capital of the north. This can
only mean one thing: don't leave without
hopping on a boat and touring one of
Europe's biggest ports. You'll make your
way through huge container vessels,
ocean liners and over-the-top yachts.
Back on land, there's a wealth of goodies
to discover, including the Old Town,
where merchants once traded coffee,
tea and spices, and today its inviting
residences and grand buildings from the
17th to the 19th centuries are a sight to
behold. The city's unique Speicherstadt
area is a collection of warehouses built on
thousands of oak piles between 1885 and
1927 in the neo-Gothic brick style. Here,
narrow streets, bridges and canals link
the world's largest warehouse complex.
But there's no doubt that one of the best
places to get a great view of the city is at
the Dockland office building, rising above
the Elbe River. And when in Hamburg...
wake up early to take a stroll through the
fish market in Altona. Want a little bit of
English while in Hamburg? Step into The
George, a Design Hotels property that's
located right on the border of the up-andcoming neighborhood St. Georg, with
trendy everything.

And we've left the country's capital city for
last: BERLIN. It's about three hours or so
from Hamburg, and it's one of those cities
that just leaves you mesmerized. Yes,
there's the world-famous Brandenburg
Gate, the Berlin Wall, and its cuttingedge style, but wow, is Berlin so much
more than that. History is ever-present at
the Topography of Terror, an outdoor
and indoor history museum located on the
site of buildings that during the Nazi regime
were the headquarters of the Gestapo.
Head east from Bradenburg Gate along
the Unter den Linden Boulevard
towards Alexanderplatz square, and
you'll pass along the Museum Island-
home to five temple-like buildings
housing treasures from 6,000 years of
human history; the Berlin Cathedral;

the Neue Wache-Central Memorial of
the Federal Republic of Germany for the
Victims of War and Dictatorship; and the
baroque Zeughaus (armoury), today
housing the German Historical Museum.
Of course, this city is also known for
its amazing nightlife and music scene,
and its famous street art, many of which
cover the remains of the Berlin Wall from
Oberbaum bridge to Ostbahnhof station,
known as the East Side Gallery. There's
a creative vibe in this city that permeates
throughout, and you'll definitely want to be
caught up in it. Explore, and then explore
some more. Practically in the shadow of
the Brandenburg Gate, the Hotel Adlon
Kempinski, located on the Unter den
Linden Boulevard, offers a gorgeous
spa, delectable dining and bar venues,
and access to the city's top restaurants,
attractions and shops. ♦

> For Black Forest cake lovers, catch a train or bus to Schwarzwald from Zurich
or Stuttgart. Find yourself in the little city of Freiburg im Breisgau and enjoy the
traditional Black Forest cake in the heart of the Black Forest. Additionally, try to eat
one the famous regional flammekuchen, a very thin baked bread topped with cheese
and other delicious toppings such as caramelized onions and bacon. While some
would try and compare it to pizza, it's entirely another experience.
> When in Berlin, there are a plethora of famous foods to try, ranging from the
currywurst at Konnopke's Imbiss to the Doner kebab at Mustafa's modest yet
famous stand off Mehringdamm, and even the old public restroom turned citywide
famous burger stand called Burgermeister. If you're in the mood for some reggae
and a solid taste of rastafari music meets African cuisine, head to the YAAM along
the river on the side of the Berlin Wall. Upon entrance, you can find yourself with such
options as African food, drinks, music and even a fun open-air area to sit around and
catch the sunset as you sip on DjuDju.
> Traditional Germans will have coffee and cake at one of the many "cafes" in
the afternoon. One of my favorites is Kaffeehaus Maldaner in Wiesbaden; it was
founded in 1859 and has a beautiful historic atmosphere serving delicious cakes and
pastries. Another great coffee place is Cafe Laumer in Frankfurt, which has been
in business since 1919. I have been going there for over 32 years and I have always
enjoyed it.
> One of the nicest day trips from Munich is a 1-hour train ride to Prien am
Chiemsee, a beautiful lake where one can take a ferry ride to two picturesque islands,
Herreninsel and Fraueninsel.
