delIghtFul Sweden
From the unspoiled northern wilderness to
the castle country of the south, sweden
varies greatly. An extraordinary group of
attractions-picturesque towns and festive
smorgasbord tables-await the visitor.
Scattered across 14 islands,
sTOCKHOLM is a city with a magical
setting, its charming neighborhoods
connected by bridges, ferries and a metro
system that doubles as an art gallery. Plan
to spend time in the nationalmuseum
(reopening 2018) and skansen OpenAir Museum; take a ferry to Djurgarden
Island to go interactive at Abba The
Museum; shop the quirky outlet shops
for local designers in the Bondegatan
neighborhood; and spend lots of time in
Gamla stan, the city's medieval heart and
the place to find both the Royal Palace
and the best Christmas market. Here, too,
is a special accommodations trio: The
Collector's Hotels; The Victory, Lady
Hamilton and Lord nelson. Consider
this sampling of unique ways to explore
Stockholm: a guided tour on a Segway;
a boat tour of the archipelago; a seal
safari; an overflight in a hot air balloon...
and you can keep on going to see more
of the country aboard a Gota Canal Cruise
from Stockholm to Gothenburg, passing
through 58 canal locks.
wIld norway
With majestic fjords, the midnight sun
and Arctic splendors, norway is often
called Europe's last wilderness. Actually,
the country has the longest coastline in
Europe, a favored route for dramatic and
adventurous cruises.
Perhaps Walt Disney's film "Frozen"
will draw more winter travelers to Oslo,
but certainly you'll need more daylight to
cover the highlights of this city, which was
settled in 1050 and still holds firm to its
Viking ancestry. Essential Oslo includes
Vigeland Park with its famous sculpture
park, and the Munch Museum, housing
the largest collection of native son Edvard
Munch's work. Then ferry over to Bygdoy,
a tranquil peninsula boasting the city's
most impressive historical artifacts; the
Viking ship Museum is also here. Back
in Oslo, take a walk atop the breathtaking
Opera House, and do whatever possible
to join a backstage tour. At some point
during your visit do drop into Mathallen,
the newly opened food hall.
36
While the Grand Hotel is Oslo's
grandest, guests can't stop raving about
the luxury hideaway, THE THIEF hotel,
overlooking the Oslo fjord.
Surely consider making the magnificently
scenic, 7-hour train trip from Oslo
to BErGEn. Encircled by majestic
mountains, fjords and glaciers, beguiling
Bergen is everyone's favorite Norwegian
town, as well as the starting point for fjord
excursions. For the most spectacular
views, take the funicular railway up Mt.
Floyen. In town, the attractions are
its super-colorful waterfront, the 18th
century wooden houses of the UNESCOhonored Bryggen district, the four KODE
museums showcasing a huge art and
design collection, and the Hanseatic
Museum. You should, of course, stay
awhile: Clarion Hotel Admiral with
harbor views is one excellent pick.
ImagInatIve FInland
Visitors to Finland are invariably dazzled
by the simple beauty of Finnish design
and by the setting in which Finns work
their magic. The design is as modern as
the imagination, and the setting is the
immense natural area of lakes and islands,
stretching through forests to a vast
Arctic wilderness.
HELsInKI, long known for design
and the sauna, now adds the appeal
of a renewed waterfront, renovated
museums and revived industrial spaces.
In this design-centric capital, places
like the former meat packing district-
Teurastamo-have transformed into
an epicenter for the creative class, one,
of course, embracing Finnish-made
products, eclectic restaurants, Finnish
beer bars, and indie and electronic music
festivals. Elsewhere in the capital, cruising
on a harbor boat trip, spending quality
time in the national Museum of Finland
and The Craft Museum of Finland,
and shopping for Arabia china, Lapponia
jewelry, Iittala crystal and Marimekko
fashions are favorite activities. Helsinki
offers a bevy of water-bound excursions,
such as a ferry ride to suomenlinna
Island (a UNESCO site) or a day cruise
to Tallinn, Estonia. And where to
sleep? radisson Blu royal Hotel is
a renowned property and a Radisson
flagship, while Hotel F6 is a stylish
addition to the boutique hotel scene. ◆
iNSiDERTIPS
> While most of the touristy parts of
Copenhagen have delightful views and
top-notch food fare, the prices can be a
little expensive for the everyday tourist.
Head northwest of the city towards the
area called Norrebro. Here you can
find not only better-priced food options,
but also several food vendors from all
around the world.
> If you're in the mood for a concert
on a summer Sunday, head straight
for Christiania, which is across the
water on the south eastern edge of
Copenhagen. This is an area created by
a group of individuals who envisioned
a utopia where they could live their
lives by their own rules. The area
is surrounded by graffiti, cafes and
interesting architecture. When you are
here, however, one rule of thumb is to
not take photos of the area. The locals
that live here live life on their terms
and really appreciate the idea that their
activity, questionable or not, remains
within the confines of their privacy. So
ditch the camera for a minute, grab a
beer and rock out at the concert.
> If you're in Copenhagen for a bit
and want to venture into Sweden to
try some of the delicious marzipan
pastries, take the train or bus from
the Central Station towards the city of
Malmo. Just across the bridge from
Copenhagen, this city offers one of the
biggest malls in Scandinavia as well as
a cozy town feel as you walk through
the old town and catch a meal or fika
on the square (a fika is a Swedish term
that means a coffee break). It is often
had in the company of good friends
and colleagues to create a mood or
atmosphere of camaraderie. So if you
run into a friendly Swede, make sure
you ask them out to coffee, chances
are you will be well on your way to
finding yourself in good company
before you know it.
