BOGOTA

Founded in 1538 by the gold-seeking Spaniards, BOGOTA
is Colombia's first city in every way: fourth largest capital with
the third highest altitude in South America; a commercial and
intellectual hub, home to world-class museums; a fascinating
colonial quarter; and delicious cuisine. Citywide there's a boom
in regional Colombian fare reflecting the country's melting pot
of cultures.
SEE/DO: At the center of the historic quarter of La
Candelaria is Plaza de Bolivar and San Carlos Palace, the
former official residence of Colombian heads of State. Liberator
Simon Bolivar slept here, and his name echoes on the plaques
of hundreds of monuments. Bogota has wonderful museums:
tops are the Museo Botero a superb collection of 19th and
20th century paintings donated by artist Fernando Botero;
the fresco-lined Santa Clara Church and Museum, and the
Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions displaying regional
crafts in a beautifully restored convent. The capital's most
glittering attraction, however, is the Gold Museum, housing
some 18,00 golden artifacts.
SIGNATURE EVENT: Each April, Bogota hosts the IberoAmerican Theater Festival, one of the largest performing
arts festivals in the world; in September, the Jazz in the Park
Festival, staged throughout the city parks, comes to town.
