SARASOTA BEACHES A SHORE THING I n a state defined by its beaches - all 825 miles of them - it takes a lot to stand out from the crowd, but Sarasota County has consistently done just that, with award-winning beaches - including Siesta Beach - that feature powderwhite sands sloping gently toward warm, crystal-clear waters. A number of area beaches have been named "Blue Wave" beaches, earning official certification by the Clean Beaches Coalition as clean, healthy and environmentally well managed. "I love Siesta Beach. The sand is like flour, and the water is clear and calm. My kids have found a bunch of sand dollars already and we've only been here an hour." - Josie J., Atlanta, GA Indeed, Sarasota beaches are like no other... and the world has taken notice. THE KEYS TO GREAT BEACHES The majority of Sarasota County's prized beaches are set on offshore islands or keys, connected to the mainland by causeways. The northernmost of these islands, Longboat Key, is the only exception as it has no direct access from the mainland and can only be reached by Lido Key to the south, keeping its pristine beaches that much more secluded. Special protection is given to nesting shorebirds and sea turtles on Longboat Key as well as all county beaches - including light restrictions during turtle season - but humans are well cared for too at full service resorts.
