and seemingly unthreatening, in a split-second things
can change and become deadly. In the case of one
of the bears, marked for research as No. 863, while
she often appears tolerant she's bluff charged people
and exhibited other aggressive behavior. Know with
certainty that once a bear is considered a threat to
human lives it will be dealt with. This is unfortunate
and why we stress to people not to do things like feed
bears or approach them, which can create conditioned
behavior and potential for dangerous outcomes. We
can't take the risk. "
Spending time near highways has proven to be a
fatal risk for some grizzly bears in Wyoming. From
2015-19, vehicle collisions killed 10 grizzlies on Wyoming highways compared to three fatalities in the two
national parks. A contributing factor is speed limits
are higher on Wyoming highways. The parks have a
speed limit of 45 mph, but the speed limit on U.S.
Highway 26/287 between Dubois and Grand Teton
National Park over Togwotee Pass is 55 mph. In recent
years, several grizzlies have found a home along that
highway, often leading to congregations of people
eager to get a good look at a grizzly.
" We understand people wanting to see and take
photos of a bear, " said Dan Thompson, Game and
Fish large carnivore section supervisor. " It may well
be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But bear jams
produce huge risks to bears and people. People get
too close to the bears and many seemingly have tunnel-vision. I once had to yell at a woman walking
with her grandchild to break her focus so she didn't
step out in front of an 18-wheeler driving the speed
limit to see a grizzly near the road. "
Wildlife managers aim to prevent those kinds of
situations. Thompson said wildlife managers are OK
with people responsibly stopping off the highway to
take photos, as long as they don't harass wildlife. Ultimately, the goal isn't to stop people from viewing these
animals, but to stop major traffic jams from occurring.
