Q: What are some of the challenges you face when relocating bears?

It is very difficult to find
suitable sites with more and more
people recreating in bear habitat
and more and more people
building homes.

BD: Relocation is a useful tool and can be a successful
management strategy at times, otherwise, we wouldn't use it.
Most folks who have a conflict with a bear, whether it's
tipping over a garbage can or getting into their grain shed,
they don't want that bear killed but they sure would like
that bear moved somewhere else. On the same note, most
people don't want a bear moved into their " backyard'' where
they live or recreate.
The challenge now is finding remote, suitable relocation
sites. We do not move bears anywhere else, except to habitat
that is currently occupied within the recovery zone. The
bucket is full. The habitat is full and there is no place where
we can put a bear where there are not significant numbers of
bears already established. It is very difficult to find suitable
sites with more and more people recreating in bear habitat
and more and more people building homes.
