cutting board, dipping the meat into the
gravy. We take all the dishes to the dining
room - red cabbage, green beans - I carry
a dangerously full, hot gravy boat in one
hand, my wine glass and third pretzel in the
other, to my usual place at the table, facing
the window, the garden and night sky. We
feast, pouring gravy over noodles and meat,
sopping drippings with soft, chewy pretzels
and refilling our glasses.
Dave tells us the story of this elk. He
thinks it is the same one he saw his first
time out on the Ferris when he was bow
hunting. Antlers have character. With time,
people can start to notice distinctions in
the herd. He found water, an aspen grove
and was eventually surrounded by elk. They
punctuated the stillness walking, breathing

and bugling. Snowflakes slowly fell and a
young bull walked in front of him. He'd
almost had a shot, but was encumbered by
a small fir tree.
He didn't kill an elk that bow trip, but he
did on the opening of rifle season. It wasn't
difficult to locate the herd. It was cold and
wet that day and a young bull materialized
out of the icy fog. It wasn't a tricky shot, and
it was over quickly. He butchered the animal
and started the long hike back to his truck,
propane stove and dry sweater. On that first
trip down, he carried only the backstraps.
The next morning, he went back for the
rest of the animal, even opting to carry the
extra weight of the head. He gives these heads
to friends and estranged girlfriends and, this
one, he gave to me. The bright white skull

was beetle-cleaned and acted as a night light
in my dark bedroom that first night, reflecting the light of the waxing moon. It was like
having another person with me. I thought
about painting its portrait.
Elke brings out the black walnut banana
cake she made for dessert. We drink vanilla
tea. I ask her about the recipe for elk sauerbraten and she tells me that she cooks the old
German way, "Pi Mal Auge." This means she
knows what she wants, but the eye creates it.
My German grandmother cooked the same
way, not measuring carefully with instruments, but with fists of flour - literally
throwing something together.
Elke always sends me home with leftovers.
I know the extra piece of chocolate frosted
banana cake will not make it to the next
